Bitcoin at $81,700 on the anniversary of its record: $149 billion wiped out in a day

Bitcoin trades at $81,710 at midday UTC, 2.07% lower than yesterday, while total crypto market capitalisation slides 5.2% to $2.73 trillion — roughly $149 billion evaporated in a single session, without smoke and without an explosion.

The irony is almost cinematic. Exactly one year after Bitcoin printed an all-time high of $126,080 on 6 October 2025, the largest cryptocurrency sits 35.2% below that level. An anniversary most bulls would rather skip, like the birthday of a team that got relegated that season.

Market breadth: 33 winners, 133 losers

Among the 200 largest projects by market cap, only 33 posted gains in the last 24 hours while 133 closed in the red. The median move is -2.81%, nearly identical to Ethereum’s decline — the market fell in unison, like an amateur choir missing the same note together.

Bitcoin’s intraday range ran from $84,808 to $81,607, a swing of almost $3,200 top to bottom. Bitcoin’s market cap now stands at $1.642 trillion on $38.06 billion of daily turnover. Circulating supply is 20.10 million of a hard-capped 21 million — 95.7% of all coins are already mined, with the remaining 900,000 waiting their turn like the last guests at a buffet.

Bitcoin dominance rounded to exactly 60.00%, with Ethereum holding 10.71%. Round numbers carry near-mystical weight in markets — traders stare at them the way football fans stare at a 1:0 scoreline, as if the digit itself could change the game.

Stablecoin turnover exceeds Bitcoin’s

The panic detector this time is not price but volume. Tether (USDT) turned over $60.50 billion in 24 hours while Bitcoin managed $38.06 billion. When “money standing still” trades more than “money at work”, the market is sending a clear message: capital is not rotating into another coin, capital is heading to the bench.

Total market turnover is $90.09 billion, with USDC adding $14.64 billion and confirming the same pattern. This is textbook defensive rotation, a script that has repeated through history like a bad habit — present in every cycle, never welcome.

Ethereum halfway to the summit

Ether changes hands at $2,398.29, down 2.81% on the day but still 1.32% higher than a week ago. The all-time high of $4,946.05 was set on 24 August 2025, and today’s price is 51.5% below it — precisely “halfway there”, as Bon Jovi put it, minus the applause.

Ethereum’s market cap stands at $292.95 billion on $13.48 billion of volume. The daily range of $2,518.86 to $2,396.22 shows selling peaked during European hours with almost no recovery afterwards.

Solana drops 2.26% to $104.40, 64.4% under its January 2025 peak of $293.31. XRP sits at $1.33 (-2.24%), BNB at $732.77 (-1.80%), and Dogecoin at $0.0792 (-3.41%), 89.2% below the level it rode toward the Moon in 2021. Cardano is the weakest of the majors: $0.2165, -4.10%, and 93% under its high — a project that went from “Ethereum killer” to Ethereum’s distant cousin.

Privacy as the only lighthouse

While everything bleeds, two “legacy” projects hold the line. Zcash (ZEC) trades at $1,251.33, down 2.59% on the day but up 14.30% on the week, with a $21.27 billion market cap — tenth on the leaderboard, ahead of Hyperliquid and Dogecoin. Monero (XMR) gains 4.43% to $630.18 and 19.01% over seven days, capitalised at $11.87 billion.

That is not coincidence but a pattern: when institutional flow weakens, capital seeks assets that require no permission, no listing and no oversight. Privacy sells like a Swiss vault in burglary season.

Gainers: a memecoin ambush and three serious names

The day’s biggest winner is Yellow (YELLOW), up 211.83% to $0.1269 — a $40.44 million cap on $3.72 million of volume. Magma Finance (MAGMA) follows with 54.96% to $0.5190 and 130.97% on the week, then Irys (IRYS) with 32.36% to $0.0203 on exceptional turnover of $180.68 million — nearly four times its own $40.64 million valuation.

MemeCore (M) adds 16.32% to $0.8782 on a $2.02 billion cap, the strongest move among top-100 projects. DigiByte (DGB) jumps 17.01% to $0.003956. Lighter (LIT) rises 8.36% to $3.69, Mask Network 8.02%, Arkham 6.93%, and Prom 6.37% with 16.50% on the week.

Losers: IOST in free fall

IOST is the weakest name on the board: -38.95% to $0.000913 on $125.12 million of volume — more than three times its $32.98 million market cap. That volume-to-cap ratio usually means one thing: a mass exit, not trading.

Bedrock (BR) sheds 21.80% to $0.4654 despite still being +20.27% on the week — a textbook correction after a steep climb. Metaplex (MPLX) falls 16.15%, The Black Bull 15.42%, AltLayer (ALT) 14.09% on $111.49 million of volume, Artificial Inu 13.36%, Aztec 12.47%, and ZKsync (ZK) 10.69% to $0.01352, 20.63% lower over seven days.

Axis Robotics (AXIS) lost 10.77% on $179.29 million of turnover against a $47.35 million cap — a ratio that looks less like trading and more like a rush for the exits at a concert.

What the numbers say

A 5.2% drop across the whole market, Bitcoin dominance pinned at a round 60% and stablecoin turnover exceeding Bitcoin’s describes a day of defence, not panic. Panic looks different: stablecoin volumes spike alongside everything else, and altcoins lose double digits in minutes.

Technically, Bitcoin defended $81,600 — the session low — but lost $84,800. A reclaim of $84,800 opens a test of $86,000; a break under $81,600 clears the path toward $79,000. Zcash and Monero remain the only sectors with positive weekly momentum, and they are the cleanest gauge of how much faith the market still places in institutions.

One year on from the all-time high, the market is not throwing a party — it is taking inventory. And inventories, as history teaches, are never fun while they last, but they always prepare the ground for someone.
