While the global crypto scene counts billions, few know that Croatia has an increasingly vibrant crypto ecosystem — from domestic blockchain startups and NFT projects to conferences attracting thousands of enthusiasts. This is the first in a series of articles about the Croatian crypto scene.
Croatian Blockchain Projects
Electore — Tokenization for Enterprise
Zagreb-based Electore is one of Croatia’s most serious blockchain startups. They specialize in tokenization of Real World Assets (RWA) and work with corporate clients. Their platform enables converting traditional assets into digital tokens, unlocking liquidity in previously illiquid markets.
Provable (Oraclize) — Croatian Oracle Pioneer
Few people know that one of the oldest oracle projects in crypto — Oraclize (now Provable) — was founded by Thomas Bertani, a Croatian from Istria. Provable was the first oracle service connecting smart contracts with real-world data, years before Chainlink. Today, Provable is part of the API3 ecosystem.
Crypto Dukes — Croatian NFT Project
Crypto Dukes is a Croatian NFT collection that drew attention from the local community. While the NFT market is not at its peak, Crypto Dukes show how Croatian developers and artists are entering the Web3 space.
Conferences and Events
Blockchain and AI Conference Zagreb
Zagreb hosts the Blockchain and AI Conference, gathering leading experts from both blockchain and artificial intelligence. The conference attracts speakers from around the world and local enthusiasts, focusing on real-world blockchain applications in business and industry.
Crypto Days Zagreb
Crypto Days is an annual event bringing together the Croatian crypto community — from beginners to experienced investors. The program includes lectures, panel discussions and networking, often featuring international speakers.
Communities and Associations
Blockchain Alliance Croatia
Blockchain Alliance Croatia (formerly Croatia Blockchain Association) is the umbrella organization gathering blockchain enthusiasts, entrepreneurs and developers. They actively work on education, advocacy for favorable regulation, and connecting the local scene with the international community.
Bitcoin Hrvatska
One of the oldest crypto communities in the region. They organize regular meetups, education sessions and social gatherings in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka and Osijek — perfect for meeting like-minded people and sharing experiences.
Regulatory Framework
Croatia has aligned its legislation with the EU MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) regulation. HANFA (Croatian Financial Services Supervisory Agency) is responsible for licensing crypto service providers. Crypto gains are taxed at 12% (capital income tax) reported through the JOPPD form, making Croatia relatively favorable compared to some other EU jurisdictions.
Several domestic companies are currently in the process of obtaining HANFA licenses, which will further legitimize the local scene.
Croatian Developers in Global Crypto
Croatian programmers actively work in numerous global crypto projects. From the Ethereum Foundation through Chainlink to Polygon — Croatian developers are sought after in the Web3 world. Croatia’s IT sector generates over 2 billion euros annually, and blockchain developers are among the highest-paid.
What the Future Holds
The Croatian crypto scene is on the rise. With MiCA regulation bringing legal certainty, a growing number of domestic projects, and an increasingly active community, Croatia has the potential to become a regional hub for blockchain innovation. In the following articles of this series, we will explore each of these segments in detail.
