BTC Dominance — What It Means and How to Use It

BTC dominance (BTC.D) is the percentage of the total crypto market cap that Bitcoin represents. When dominance rises, Bitcoin outperforms altcoins. When it falls, altcoins strengthen — known as “alt season”.

How Is It Calculated?

BTC.D = (Bitcoin market cap / total crypto market cap) × 100

Currently around ~58%, meaning Bitcoin makes up over half of the entire crypto market.

What It Tells Us

  • BTC.D rising — investors are cautious, moving to “safer” Bitcoin. Common in bear markets.
  • BTC.D falling — money flowing to altcoins. Start of alt season.
  • BTC.D stable — market in balance, no major capital rotation.
