BTC dominance (BTC.D) is the percentage of the total crypto market cap that Bitcoin represents. When dominance rises, Bitcoin outperforms altcoins. When it falls, altcoins strengthen — known as “alt season”.
How Is It Calculated?
BTC.D = (Bitcoin market cap / total crypto market cap) × 100
Currently around ~58%, meaning Bitcoin makes up over half of the entire crypto market.
What It Tells Us
- BTC.D rising — investors are cautious, moving to “safer” Bitcoin. Common in bear markets.
- BTC.D falling — money flowing to altcoins. Start of alt season.
- BTC.D stable — market in balance, no major capital rotation.
